On leaving Birdsville we stopped somewhere that Kate could have some tea and scones in the shade .
This garden ensemble was set up on a gibber plain in the middle of nowhere
We bounced into Boudira after a few hours on the dustiest roads so far. Van is having a little dust ingress to say the least !
We set up in the Roadhouse campsite which was empty. We walked along the nearby waterhole and saw a couple of Brolgas that made a hasty retreat once they spotted us.
We sat under the awning and had a few beers . One of the V8ers from Birdsville pitched up , put their caravan right in front of our view then put their chairs under our awning . They were lonely I think !
We then visited the Royal Hotel which is little changed from the 1800s , mud brick walls that now has a tin roof. It was a bit like the bar out of star wars, we stayed a respectable time (barman fact – its two beers ) then knocked out a tooth ,closed one eye and limped out (so that we didn’t draw attention to ourselves )
We popped into the roadhouse for some scran. There we met Jaz and Alecia two lovely young women from Hull that were working in the pub for a couple of months as they attain their second year visa. It would be fair to say that they were as daft as they were delightful and Kate adopted them !
We sat and chatted with them as we ate our frozen veggies and frozen chicken schnitzels. (the lorry bringing their fresh supplies had tipped over and the town was living out of its freezers.)
Near the end of the night we met Nathan the chef. Now Nathan is quite a character who has a penchant for mimicking an irish accent ,this results in something just short of a madmax/Snatch mashup ! Couple of drinks with Nathan and he invited us to go Yabbie hunting. Now you may have picked up by now that I am a big fan of the Yabbie so the offer was accepted. We all ( Us ‘Nathan , Jaz and Alecia and a young man we refer to as shaggy ) bundled in to a little scooby doo van and set off for the creek.
The yabbies were of the blue claw variety ( native ) and they were attempting to crawl up the rapids and rocks near a ford. Nathan took the lead and soon had a couple. He then wanted to show us how you can wear Yabbies as an Australian fashion accessory .
Apres yabbie hunting saw us back at Nathans , after he stumbled and broke his dining room table into bits he proceeded to empty his freezer of yabbies as a present – a real outback gent indeed !
In the fuzz of the evening we had somehow negotiated a bacon buttie breakfast at 8am . As is our want we were prompt at 0759 where we had to explain our deal with the owner ! Jaz turned up and all was good , the best instant coffee money can buy (coffee machine only gets switched on from May )and a superb egg and bacon toasted sarny.
I now have enough yabbies for a midnight feast and or bait for months !
