1st to 9th March
So after we had calmed down from the exhilaration of the escape we realised we needed somewhere to stay . We headed to Lyrup Flats which is between Renmark and Berri. National park but unusually dog friendly too . At 13 dollars a night with a free long drop toilet thrown in who could complain ! There are over 30 campsites spread over miles of the banks of the Murray We spent 6 days at Lyrup Flats over 2 camps. We upgraded to one with our own private beach. It was great for swimming , dog bathing and feeding worms to passing fish via a rod and line.
Keeva loved her long walks and cooling down in the river however had some seriously bad hair days what with bindis and dust .
At Lyrup we had our own 24/7 free ferry that took us across to the community club (bar ) and back. Opened a whole 3 hours a day and did food on Thursday Friday . Great little spot . There were 4 little old wisened men propped at the bar on stools with a pot of beer in front of them one night. When i went in for round 1 they were talking tractors , round two something about producing raisins I didn’t understand, round three was South Australian politics but by round 4 we were discussing the detailed pros and cons of a trip to Thai land to experience “ladyboys”. Like an icky episode of Vicar of Dibley on crack.
From Lyrup we headed to the free camp of Headings Road , Crooked Straight or Murtho Forest (so good they named it thrice). This time free with your own little beach , numerous lace monitors (Guanas) and the same fish that don’t play by the rules.
At Headings there is a fantastic viewing stand about 4 km from the campsite that gives stupendous vistas across the Murray flood plain as well as taking in the cliffs. A veritable facebook spamming followed of sunset shots.
We visited the local Woodshed Brewery where most of the patrons arrive by boat . Summer Ale was the winner of the coveted Woodburn Friday Beer competition.
Our stay coincided with a long weekend public holiday and the river was busy with houseboats and leisure craft some with doughnuts/waterskiers in tow which was great to watch from the banks.
The day after the holiday it was back to crickets !
We explored every inch of the towns of Berri and Renmark both are very hospitable to travellers with great facilities.

Thanks mum -will add some more soon
Looks like you’re having a wonderful time – wish we could get out of the village much less the country! (Still lockdown ends next week so we can begin to go further afield.) Carry on having fun, hope those fish learn to bite the hook not the bait!
Thanks Pamela -fingers crossed things start to stabilise and you open up ahead of schedule .
