Then onto a council site at Barmera just next to the Mens shed . Great spot with walks on the lake shore and exploring the small but interesting town . Being next to the mens shed we were kept updated with how the world was going to hell in a handbag and even nostalgia isn’t as good as it used to be . They were actually very jolly and pleasant .
We were keen to try out the campsite at Overland Corner and the historic Inn that is near it but when we arrived we were underwhelmed and to be honest it felt a little creepy so we politely u turned and skedaddled.
A couple of nights in Ramco near Waikerie . We started on one site with a nice aspect by the river but boy did it stink . A heady mixture of fish carcases and Eau de urina . So we decided to see how long it would take us to pack up the van , tables , chairs etc and connect to the car . 12 minutes and 20 seconds . Not too shoddy and moved on to a normal smelling spot .
Our last stop on the river lands was Morgan . This was once the second biggest port in South Australia but now is a pretty much preserved stone built town . It has an old wharf by the river where the boats would move their loads of wood , wool and dried fruit to markets.
We walked along the old railwayline next to the wharf and came across a line of hairy processioanary caterpillars. This link will take you to the video .
Two great old pubs sit in opposition across a narrow street . We had to visit both so as not to show any allegiance. It was in the Commercial Hotel where I met a local at the bar who was the local arborist . I introduced myself and he said “Hello my name is Morgan Treeman “
