Punsand Bay 28th May
What a great place. Site with sun and shade that looks directly onto the beach, and a bar and a pool !!!
We stayed two nights in the end . Weaving our trip to the tip of Australia into the stay.
First day i went to the shop to enquire about how much a slab of beer would be – 110 bucks for mid strength . Heavy EQ would be 125. So decided to drive back to Bamaga across 22 rivers and a 50k round trip to get a slab at the steal of 85 dollars .
I wasn’t looking too keenly on the trip to the tip . I was expecting a very commercialised concrete path with souvenir shop etc . However it was a rough track , no retail and amazing views. We saw our first ever Orca patrolling the eastern side of the tip in the choppy water.
We also met up with the A&R men . Adam and Ross from Weipa at the croc tent ( souvenir retail outlet ) . We agreed to meet up at punsand for lunch the following day .
Fishing report – day one Queenie about 40cm ,parrot fish and shark day two Threadfin salmon about 50cm rock cod and a couple of sharks . Excellent .
The salmon cooked and tasted amazing .
As i fished at 0630 from the beach i witnessed the local big daddy croc strutting his stuff in the bay . Despite bricking it i couldn’t help smile at the fact that all that was missing was the tick tock music from Peter Pan !
On our last evening Kate woke me up in the night shouting that she had “Peed the bed “ “Peeeed the bed and it was effing huge “. I tried to quite her down as it was either a bad dream or the onset of geriatric bladder issues and our camping neighbours need not know about either. Apparently Kate had been shouting that their was a giant centi “peed” in her bed and that it was rather large . I was tasked with ejecting the many legged bug which has a venomous bite (what doesn’t in Oz ).
Kate also keeps tabs on Carlton via telstras free no data streaming of AFL
Long game
We had a lovelly lunch with the A&R men from melbourne . They had obviously had a bit of a lovers tiff as it looked like Adam may be flying home from Cairns . Something to do with tent flatulence .
A&R told us about their trip to the tip. They had been on low tide and as such were able to walk through the mangrove swamp. One of the many grey nomad tours was taking place . Adam started his impersonation of a howler monkey hidden from the tour group . Hidden but close enough to hear them the guide responded to the question about th noise that it was one of our cape monkeys . (there are no monkeys in cape york) . Im sure the tour group were impressed with his tropical mammal knowledge !
