Coral Bay and Quobba 8th October
From The Cape Range National Park we dropped down into Coral Bay . The home of the brightest turquoise waters on bleached white sands , turtles, fish and thousands of school kids ! We managed to squeeze into of the two campsites in coral bay at the end of the western australian school holidays . It turns coral bay into Blackpool at the Glasgow Fair fortnight. Actually it was great seeing young families enjoy such a great location even if we were all packed in like claustrophobic sardines.
Its was great to be able to fish on sand again after what seems a long time of rock fishing and the toll it takes on your gear despite being very productive.
Also great being able to drive on the beach again. We did overstretch ourselves a tad and got bogged in the sand good and proper taking an hour of digging and the use of our essential trax and to get free.
There were also some great dunes to have a spin on too. Kate brought her dune face for the trip
I undertook the ritual celebratory dune dance
On day one I sauntered over to the bakery /cafe for a coffee and was presented with a scrum of biblical proportions with around 50 people queuing and nearly fighting for coffee. Dads who looked like they had been pushing strollers since the wee hours of the morning with toddlers auditioning for the school choir, the lycraed white walkers and a few fishos filling in time before their charter set sail .Not the calming ease into the day I was expecting.
We had a great drive/lunch/fish on the beach and were pleased with the trevally, dart and threadfin salmon that gave themselves to the woodburn pairing .
Kate has mastered the art of glamfishing
We got an underage concession for thursday night
From Coral Bay we passed through Carnarvon , stocked up then found ourselves in Quobba station .We were pretty much on out own here. This is a rock ledge fishing mecca with people travelling from all over australia to cast from perches in the cliff face into the deep ocean for big pelagic fish such as spanish mackerel upwards of 25kg . It does however come at risk and there have been numerous fatalities over the years with big king waves wiping people off and there is no way out of the ocean. Unfortunately /fortunately it was too wind for me to have a crack at it .
The blowholes near the station however were in full force due to the swells and wind
