Lake view caravan park Broken Hill
Day started with a historic walk round broken hill which has an amazing array of building a from the 1890s . Quick brekkie then off to Silverton – bit disappointed – not much there and very very touristy – pub looks created not real nestled next to the Mad Max museum . The cemetery was really interesting and chilling though with the short lifespans on view from those early settlers average ages around 28 .
Broken hill however is a really intriguing town , genuinely impressive vintage buildings with a back drop of cold foreboding mountainous mining slag heaps , a town with a clearly hard working class identity on the back of the mines yet it embraces a broken heel transvestite party and parade . We had a nice meal in the Palace Hotel – seafood curry not bad at all . (especially when it is around 10 hours from the sea and all its water is pumped from Menindee !)
We met some really interesting people. Grub is hauling his bus and trailer with car in around all stations Australia , he has worked on farms , mines and run a trike tour business and was kind enough to spend half an hour giving us the benefit of his experience in shaping our future journey . The young fellas who we met in the pool who were motorcycling the area and winding their way back to Adelaide . As ever I had some spare cans and they were sans beer ! Hope their mate who was so concussed after a motorbike fall off-road had to be air ambulanced home is ok . Next day we woke up to 4 extra chilled cans of beer on the table as thanks for the pool beer !
Well I wasn’t looking forward to broken hill but it surprised and drew me in , who would have though that a hard nosed mining town like dodge city would curry my favour ! Any town with these street names cant be called pretentious !
