We spent just over a week between Adelaide and the Barossa Valley -7th – 14th February
Adelaide lived up to being the driest capital city in Australia and we had a few hot days too which had been a change from the weeks previous .
We stayed at the Windsor Garden Caravan park when in Adelaide. A 15 minute walk got you to a stop on the Adelaide O bahn which is a busway system. The buses run on tracks then on roads. A six minute ride saw us in the CBD. We explored the south Australian Museums and Art galleries and the state library.
Adelaide is a fantastic capital city with a real laid back feel and balance between sightseeing and commercial hub.
Managed to get the car its 100k service , we have racked up over 50k since we left Melbourne.
Jodie and Georgia bought us a bike tour of the Barossa for our christmas and we managed to avoid the 40 degree days and hit a perfect 23 degree day to explore. Part of the conditions of the present ( yes a chrimbo pressie with conditions !) was that it had to be a tandem . As Louie our bike hirer explained riding a tandem is all about communication communication communication so we knew we were doomed from the start ! It was great fun and we ventured out to Angaston from our base in Nuriootpa where we had an early lunch at the Taste of Eden Valley which represents a group of artisan food and drink producers of the region.
From there we pushed on to Yalumba winery where we sampled some red and white wares.
They have a Cooperage at Yalumba which was great to see and smell !
Then it was back to Nuriootpa and a visit to Penfolds with visits to the cellar door , micro brewery and gin distillery. Kate could have been a guest lecturer !
Fortified by that we took a wee cycle out to Maggie Beers farm which is about 5 k out of town.
Out plan was to have a fine luncheon and a few revivers. However on arriving we found that the main incoming power board had blown and there was no electricity at all. The restaurant manager took pity on us and shouted us a couple of glasses of what he called “happy red”.
We did have a walk around the deli and the film set kitchen where Maggie does her cooking and baking.
By the time we got back to “Nuri” there were a coupe of painful backsides so we dropped off the tandem and had a couple of frothies to finish of in the Hostelries in the main street. A great day was had and next time I will be getting one of the rear wheel drive tandems……..
