Lorella Spring 8th June
A poo with a view ! This belonged to a lone male traveller. Sympathies to any passing boats.
Lorella station is a mere Million acres . In the internationally known unit of measurement this means it is a fifth the size of Wales. It has a mix of aboriginal and European history with cave paintings and ruins of the original European settlement by a man named Billy
It has a unique offering . You pay a nightly fee but then can camp anywhere on the station pretty much . They have access to the Gulf of Carpentaria ,hot springs and numerous mini gorges and fishing holes .
They also have a social hour (happy hour ) where they feed their pet fresh water crocs and we all share our stories of the day .
We had a day where we undertook 5 bush walks each with a gorge or a pool at the end of each of them .
My favourite two experiences were Yarnarndu Inlet (called the secret fishing spot) and Nudie springs. The fishing spot is 100k from the station on this very remote inlet. Some challenging spots on the tracks in and out for good measure.
We only stayed a night as the road was too rough for the caravan so we stayed in the swags again and Kate not as keen after the “peed the bed ” incident . I caught a lovely queenie off the beach and lost 4 more .
I also landed a Crocodile Garfish with a great set of choppers and a little bream too.
On the way home from the beach we dropped into nudie springs . A hot thermal spring mixes with normal groundwater that results in a natural open air hot bath !
There is a bit of intrigue around a 160km bitumen road that dissects the property thanks to a mining company which subsequently gone bust. The CEO got fined for clearing the land before he got permits. The road has been used for illegal hunting and cattle stealing as it provides an easy and quick route in and out .
We also took the opportunity to have a row in a tinny along eagles nest billabong .
The camp showers are powered by “donkeys” -home made hot water heaters with a wood fuel source.
