No Barn and really no Hill but lots of Boobies around and we do love it here. Came for two weeks and stayed just over two months (our personal best)!
NB- We have tried a new format with less photos on the blog but more on the video which you can get on this link . Feedback is a gift so let know if you prefer this or the old format.
Barn Hill is part of the Thango Cattle station one of the few family owned cattle stations in WA. Most are owned by mining companies who operate pastoral leases. Thango was bought back in the sixties by the current family . It is now 1.6Million acres -for those in the UK thats the same land mass as Northumberland . It has 50km of coastline and is 170km south of Broome
The station has three rocky headlands and two sandy beaches in a 6km stretch in front of the campsite. Great for beach walks , sunrises , sunsets and a variety of different productive fishing options.
It also has a cute little cafe with serves coffee along with cakes , vanilla slices, bread all made on site. In an evening they did takeaway pizza made in the station too. They have musicians on every week or so which was pretty cool as well.
Toilets and showers are open to the sky which we loved (no photos from me for obvious reasons although some simple deviant did keep flying his drone over)
We arrived mid May and were lucky enough to go straight into what was probably the most ideal spot for us . Because we have a relatively short van we could get it side on to the ocean and had uninterrupted views up the north beach . We had our own little path down the the beach which Keeva knew off by heart PDQ.
There was rain only once but it was 25mm in night which made the drive out to restock in Broome the next day pretty interesting ! The Bowling green was briefly an olympics swimming pool.
We got into a very nice rhythm . Sunrise walk for Gary and Keeva , brekky , fishing depending on tides , coffee/slice at the cafe for Kate and Keeva , cooking/baking then beer/G&Ts with sunset . Rinse and repeat 60 times.
Kate set the van up very well for Englands doomed attempt at Euro success.
We had a good set up for watching the british lions warm up games supported by out first tier beer sponsor .
Needless to say we ate well thanks to the ocean and a few sweet treats and we always keep well hydrated .
Kate adopted a grown daughter (Georgia Lee) who served coffee in the cafe and I had a brief bromance with her partner Tyler ! We only got together at the end of our stay but it was fun.
On the fish front we feasted on Blue nose threadfin , school mackerel ,spanish mackerel and dark tailed snapper. Unusually tuna came in from the deep ocean to feed on the baitfish that were everywhere . A few were caught from the beach but they were just too fast for this fat scotsman.
I fished off one of the headlands (also in video clip ) and my popper lure got smashed by a 3 metre shark which took it from underneath and completely breached the surface before landing on my line and busting off .
I love Boobies aka Sula Leucogaster the 1.5 m wingspanned marine bird that also came in to fee on the bait fish . There is a clip in the video attached of one catching its tea.
We had two croc related incidents on the beach
Just one of the best campsites in Australia .
Great video guys.
We are still stuck in Melbourne…
