We stayed alongside the mighty Fitzroy River on the way to Broome . It was flowing pretty well and there were lots of serious fishos camped on its banks . We were now in croc country for the first time with Keeva so we were of course on high alert. We got smashed by mozzies at sunset and the temperature didn’t go below 25 at night from a high of 37 during the day so the generator was out to help with the air con to take the edge off .
Our stocks of everything were low so we dipped into the freezer for the homemade meals made specially for these occasions .
We stayed in Broome for a couple of days restocking our supplies and getting bits and pieces. Watched sunset at Cable Beach and took photos of the camel jockeys that train every night for the Annual Broome Stakes .
The weather was pretty oppressive with hot days and steamy nights. We woke each morning to moisture laden air and heavy dew. This disappeared as soon as the sun appeared .
Then off to Middle Lagoon which is up in Cape Leveque about 200 ks north of Broome .Here is some Drone footage of our time there – just click on the link https://youtu.be/BnoEQtyVWHY
Middle lagoon was one of our favourites from our big lap so we were keen to revisit . On that occasion we were there in August and were able to see the whales passing the ocean in front of the caravan every day.
Many of the resorts/communities in Cape Leveque remain closed as aboriginal communities are high risk in terms of covid complications. Middle lagoons indigenous land owner applied for an exemption hence it was open. As we were out of high season we were able to get a spot right on the cliff edge over looking the sea .
In the first few days Kate spotted these crocodile scrape marks on the beach round the corner from the caravan , the day after a fisherman saw a 3m croc who was moseying round the rocks at high tide. Needless to say everyone was very careful near the waveline from then on !
Middle Lagoon is dog friendly so it was great to be able to drop down from the caravan and cool all three of us in the sea. Keeva was struggling a little in the humid heat. One day we were paddling in the crystal clear water when someone was screaming at us from the top of the cliff. Our first thought was croc , but there was none to see. Next thing the screamer comes down the steps waving his arms at us . When he finally gets to us he informs us that he is employed by the campsite as a gardener . I felt like i should ask for his ID card but i didn’t. He told us very curtly that this was a no dog beach and that it should be obvious because of the sign . We of course hadn’t see any sign . So in the end we were marched off the beach like naughty schoolchildren.
We had some great neighbours in our time here . Braydon and Jade who were on their honeymoon from Yarra Valley and were rooftop tentinging for a month . Zane who was touring on his own , fishing and filming for his youtube channel pomsinoz by Zane Young. Jenny and Loui were on the way to see family and were great fun . We caught up with them again in Broome for a Guantham point sunset soiree.
The fishing was better than i remember it being last time probably due to the water temperature being warmer being nearer the summer months. I caught , coral trout , barramundi cod, black tip reef sharks but the best was a 1.01metre queenfish caught on the incoming tide off the rocks on a metal slug lure. The fish used the current and got side on so really gave me a good fight . As I landed it at my feet it came free but i managed to catch it . On inspection the split ring that attaches to the lure had been straightened during the fight.
Kate ever the keen nature photographer got a few good snaps of the local wild life on cable beach. Not sure of the exact species but there were lots of them but strangely the same age, sex and shape.
Excellent update on your travels…love Kates eye for a rare nature shot!!
Keep safe, loving the blogs x
Oh and the drone footage was excellent!!
Photography is definitely better on this trip. Really good. Not that it wasn’t good before. Just more variety now😊
