Shark Bay 14th October
Denham is the most westerly publicly accessible town in Australia and sits on the edge of Shark Bay. Shark bay has within it the largest sea grass beds in the world . This provides an abundance of fish as well as turtles, dolphins and dugongs. We were lucky enough to see all three. The first were the bottle nose dolphins at monkey mia. We attended a ranger hosted event early one morning and i was lucky enough to be picked out from the 60 or so attendees to feed the dolphin by hand. You used to be able to touch them and they fed the young etc. But they found that this was causing high rates of infant mortality as they could not thrive in the wild. Now only the old dolphins are fed and its restricted three times a day and a small amount.
This dolphin statue was carved out of the rock made up of tiny shells that occurs localy and was traditionally used to make houses.
We then spotted two dugongs during fishing expeditions the best sighting when we travelled up to Cape Peron over 5ks of sandy track. They are pretty bug at 3ms long and apparently are the source of the mermaid legends . These sailors must have been adrift for many years !
The peninsula was originally first encountered by europeans in the 16th century by a Dutchman called Harthog. He named it Eendtracht- cant imagine why the name hasnt stuck !
Lunchtime drinks at the bar overlooking the bay became de rigour . Here is woodburn social media in action
Tantric supping
Happy fisho !
Apparently cabriolet hats are in .
Mulloway caught off the rocks at Eagle Bluff along with a few pink snappers.
I fished eagle rock on consecutive nights , first one my neighbours were , well druggies . They puffed away on what looked to be crack or hash pipes . As i left about two hours after darkness a rod and bait and some gear had been left behind – i assumed someone was returning . The next evening it was still there. The mess they had left was disgraceful with empty boxes and bags all over the rocks. Took me 20 minutes tidying up but in the process became a new owner of a nice 8 foot rod !
This was advertised as a scottish shower !
