Cleaverville 11th September
Cleaverville is in between Roeburn and Karatha. We have mixed emotions about this place as it was an amazing spot but a dark shadow hangs over the area. On the day we arrived there were newspaper reports about Roeburn which has 1500 mainly indiginous residents where an estimated 90% of school age children had been sexually molested by a group of 36 males. It is shocking and confronting that this can carry on openly in this day and age. As ever nothing is as simple as is seems and the underlying cause in the resistance to contact local authorities is a deeply rooted disenfranchisement and “learned helplessness” .
Our campsite was perched on a sand dune with views out to the whales breaching in the deep water , we were able to have a campfire and the fishing was great with good queenies and trevally being caught. I also landed my first Bluebone or Black tuskfish. This was great eating and yes all its bones are aquamarine blue !
